Patient Survey Indicates Serious Problems with Quality Care

Resurrection hospitals scored below the national average on 90% of survey questions.  The survey was conducted by the Federal Government's Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, with the collaboration of the Hospital Quality Alliance.  The data is published on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Hospital Compare website.30

Each of Resurrection's hospitals performed poorly on the survey:

  • Resurrection Medical Center- below the national average on 100% of the survey questions.31

  • Saint Joseph Hospital- below the national average on 80% of the survey questions.32

  • St. Mary- below the national average on 80% of the survey questions.33

  • Saint Francis of Evanston Hospital- below the national average on 90% of the survey questions.34

  • Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center- below the national average on 90% of the survey questions.35

  • Westlake Hospital- below the national average on 100% of the survey questions.36

  • West Suburban Medical Center- below the national average on 90% of the survey questions.37

Some of the more disturbing results of the survey were:

  • At West Suburban Medical Center, only 50% of patients responded that they "always" received help as soon as they wanted- a sign of potentially hazardous short staffing.38

  • At Saint Joseph Hospital, only 55% of patients reported always receiving help as soon as they wanted it- another sign of potentially hazardous short staffing.39

  • At Our Lady of the Resurrection, Saint Francis of Evanston and St. Mary Hospitals, a third of patients reported their room and bathroom were not always clean.40

  • At Westlake Hospital, 37% of patients reported that their pain was not always well controlled.41

  • At West Suburban Medical Center and Our Lady of the Resurrection, 43% of patients reported that they would not definitely recommend the hospital.42
