Public Health Authorities Cite Resurrection Medical Center

  • Resurrection Medical Center (RMC) was placed on State Monitoring in 2006 for failure to meet the minimum standards established by the Medicare program to ensure quality hospital care.  RMC remained on state monitoring until 2008.89

  • RMC has been repeatedly investigated and cited by public health authorities over the past five years.90

Resurrection Medical Center Performed Poorly on Government Survey of Patients

  • On a government survey of patient satisfaction, Resurrection Medical Center scored below the national average on 100% of the survey questions.91

  • On the patient satisfaction survey, 44% of RMC patients reported that they did not always receive help as soon as they wanted it- a sign of potentially hazardous short staffing.92

  • More than one-third of RMC patients reported that their room and bathroom were not always clean.93

  • More than half of the surveyed RMC patients reported that the areas around their rooms were not always quiet at night.94

  • Resurrection Medical Center performed below the nation's top hospitals on 92% of the process of care measures monitored by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.95

Resurrection Medical Center Compares Poorly to Similar Hospitals on Key Quality Indicators

  • The 2008 Blue Star Hospital Report awarded hospitals up to ten possible stars based on their performance compared to their peer group in ten areas.  One-third of the ranked Illinois hospitals received seven, eight or nine stars out of a possible ten.  Resurrection Medical Center only received six stars.96

  • RMC did not receive a star for overall satisfaction with hospital care because it failed to receive a score of at least 88 percent on a survey sent to BlueCross BlueShield of Illinois members.97

  • RMC did not receive a star for their performance on the the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's inpatient quality indicators.  This measure is based on the hospital's mortality rates for specific medical conditions compared to their peers.98

Doctors Rated Resurrection Medical Center Lower than Competitors for High-Risk Adult Surgery

  • A recent survey asked Chicago-area physicians to rate local hospitals on how well they treated patients for high-risk adult surgery.  Only 26% of doctors rated RMC "very good" or "excellent" compared to the 42% of doctors who gave top marks to Resurrection's competitors.99
